Beyond Academics

Life @IISC

LIFE AT SCHOOL

When one enters the gates of Indian International School , a sense of calm and tranquility is felt. The beautifully maintained gardens with their blooming flowers and the untypical school building come as a pleasant surprise to the uninitiated visitor. There is hardly any noise that one usually encounters in an area, which houses about 2000 children. It is this pleasant feeling that makes up the climate of the school.

The most pleasant physical environment of the School, the beautiful garden, and general air of order and organized functioning adds in no small measure to the value of a conducive environment in which to grow up in and from which to learn. Children are generally relaxed and enjoy coming to School. There is an atmosphere of freedom, fun and learning. Teachers have total academic freedom and a lot of experimentation takes place.

Children are given a variety of experiences that expose them to new situations and people. Children are able to reach out to teachers easily and in this, the ‘Home Room’ is very helpful. The relationship between teachers, parents and children is a constantly growing one. In short, IISC is a family and all its members – be it the children, the teachers, the parents or the support staff – have a special bond that lasts for life.

In addition to the competitive athletics, other sports including, cricket, football, Volleyball, table tennis, chess, carom, throw ball, gymnastic, basketball along with art, dance (classical, western, Bharathanatyam) music(tabala, quitter, drum, piano, key board, harmonium, flute) drama (theoretical activities) yoga and taekwondo are offered. HOME ROOM & HRT

Everyday a period of about half an hour is set aside for the teacher who is in charge of the class to interact with the student. A class is known as a “Home Room Group” and the teacher a “Home Room Teacher” (HRT for short). The HRT is responsible for all round development of pupil and is a link between the parents and the principal. The HRT maintains individual records of all the pupils.

Whenever a child is found to be weak in one or the other subject, the HRT calls the parents and arranges a meeting with the concerned subject teacher to discuss the attitude, work-habits and the ways to monitor the progress of the child. As a rule, the same HRT is expected to continue as the leader of the group for two years.

The HRT is also responsible for excursions, tours, camps and project for awareness of social and national issues, discussion on current affairs, the cultural activities of the class and its participation in the programmes conducted in the assembly. Thus it is the HRT who knows the total child; his/her friends, preferences, attitudes, social and intellectual traits, mental and physical health, familial background, etc.

The teacher thus becomes familiar with the student’s emotional health and temperamental characteristics, enabling her/him to extend pastoral care for the growth and development of his/her wards.
